Really enjoyed you all on Colbert Report. I felt the energy flowing off the TV screen.

Some of those dance moves were incredible.

Square music for anything of african influence. Take a lesson from VINX. pretty disapointed musically.

Hey, Anonymous #2, appreciate your comment, and I'll definitely check VINX out, but I'd have to strongly disagree with you, and urge you to check out Fela Kuti's huge catalog at Fela.net. There are so many sounds that've come out of Africa throughout history, and calling Fela's music square is definitely missing its essence. If the performance on The Colbert Report didn't communicate its decided un-square-ness, then that's one thing (though I think most would disagree), but Fela is pretty much the antithesis of square, and worth looking at again.

Cheers.

To all the other commenters Anon #1, Devans, and Nikita - thanks for your comments. We're glad the energy and passion came across on the screen!

Is there a soundtrack for the Broadway play yet? We're going to see it at Christmas, and it would be great to have something to lkisten to over and over to remind me of what I think will be a great musical experience.
BTW, Can't help but hear a funk beat reminiscent of James brown on Zombie!

Hey Scott - there's no cast album for FELA! yet, sorry (but there will be!). In the meantime, I highly recommend you pick up the recently-released Fela: The Best of the Black President (http://www.knittingfactoryrecords.com/artists/fela-kuti/store/). A ton of the songs that are used in the show (including Zombie) are on that album, and it'll be a great way to get you into the spirit!

I got to see Fela twice in the 80s and early 90's. He was up there with Bob Marley and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. What amazed me about the perf on CR was that the guy playing Fela even walked like Fela did. I hope this show tours as I'd love to see it

Scott, you are absolutely right about the JB influence. Fela was very tuned in to many types of music especially James Brown. Good catch.

Beautiful, beautiful piece of work. I grew up listenning and enjoying Fela's music back in Nigeria. This is simply the best way to celebrate the legacy of a beautiful artist and the inventor of Afrobeat.
